Integrative Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy Series

6 Presentations/Discussions with Dr Carla Leone PhD, Dr Arthur Nielsen MD, Dr Heather Macintosh PhD and Dr Karen Bloomberg PhD on ZOOM

We at the Institute of Somatic Psychotherapy (IOSP) are very excited to present our upcoming online series on Couple Therapy for 2024. The series will highlight different ways self psychology can be integrated with non-psychoanalytic models and then apply these ideas to treatment of specific couple problems and populations.

This year, we continue our collaboration with Dr Carla Leone and bring in her colleagues: Dr Arthur Nielsen, Dr Karen Bloomberg and Dr Heather Macintosh. All four of them teach the Integrative Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy program – sponsored by the (Chicago) Institute for Clinical Social Work – one of the top couples teaching programs in the US. All are members of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology.

We will be offering a series of 6 online 2 hr live presentations on the specific topics outlined below:

The first 2 sessions will focus on 2 different models of integrative psychoanalytic couples therapy – one by Carla and one by Arthur. Karen will then compare Self Psychology-Informed Couple Therapy with Emotional Focused Therapy for couples. We then move into more specific areas of couples’ therapy: couples with sexual difficulties, trauma history and queer couples. For each session there will be pre-reading in the form of a journal article or a section of a book, a presentation and an interactive discussion.

Topics covered (teacher):

  • Self Psychology and Psychoeducation: When Are Educating or Directive Interventions Self Psychological? (Carla)
  • A Roadmap for Couple Therapy: Integrating Systemic, Psychodynamic and Behavioural Approaches (Arthur)
  • Comparing Self Psychology-Informed Couple Therapy to Emotional Focused Therapy for Couples – Overlaps and Differences (Karen)
  • Couples with Sexual Difficulties (Carla)
  • Intersectionality in Couple Therapy: working with same sex or queer couples (Heather)
  • Couples in which one or both are Trauma Survivors (Heather)

Couple Therapy from a Self Psychology Perspective

3 Live Presentations/Discussions with Dr Carla Leone

We at the Institute of Somatic Psychotherapy (IOSP) are very excited that Carla Leone, PhD has agreed to run a series of three 2 hour online presentations and discussions of three of her papers on the application of contemporary intersubjective self psychology to couple therapy.

The first will focus on her 2008 paper Couple therapy from the perspective of self psychology and intersubjective systems theory and will provide an overview of how major tenets of self psychology can be applied to work with couples. The second class will address a common dilemma in couple therapy – whether to ever see partners separately – based on Dr. Leone’s most recent paper, currently in press, titled Individual Sessions as Part of Couple Therapy? How Concepts from Self Psychology Can Help Us Decide. The third class will apply this couples approach to work with couples dealing with the aftermath of infidelity, based on Dr. Leone’s two published papers on that topic.

In each two hour class Dr. Leone will summarise and elaborate on major points from her papers, facilitate an open discussion of the concepts presented, and respond to clinical case material presented by participants.

19 Feb 2022: We need to talk about Suicide – A non-Medical view from a psychotherapy perspective.

 Live Webinar with Ernst Meyer

When: Saturday 19 February 22 1-3 pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time)

Cost: A$70 (see link below)

PACFA endorsed for 2 CPD hrs

Western societies predominantly apply a medical view when it comes to “mental health”.  At the same time, a contribution (or even an understanding) by non-medical psychotherapies is largely missing. This webinar aims to address that gap, and stimulate a dialog about our own assumptions and attitudes towards the suicidal.

How is a medical perspective applied to those who are choosing to end their lives, and what is an alternative view from psychotherapy? Guided by medical principles, where is the focus of the conversation, and how does psychotherapy differ? When it comes to clinical practice, who are the “experts” we seek out for guidance. Suicide attempt survivors who know what it’s like to be suicidal? Or medical professionals, community leaders, politicians who belief they know?

Beyond professional training, how does cultural background and personal belief systems influence how we join (or perhaps avoid) the conversation? What actually is it that we are talking about when the matter of suicide emerges in a conversation? What are our personal and professional views/beliefs/convictions/attitudes/ assumptions about those who contemplate ending their life? What informs our thinking?

How might these matters get in the way in clinical practice? But maybe most importantly: what actually helps?

In this webinar Ernst aims to

  • -use first person accounts to highlight and clarify what it is like to feel suicidal
  • -bring attention how first person accounts might differ from mainstream opinions about suicide
  • -raise awareness that our personal and professional attitudes towards suicide affect how we approach suicide
  • -offer a clinical approach that has been experienced as helpful to those in need for help

Ernst Meyer is a Registered Clinical Psychotherapist based in Sydney/Australia and has worked extensively with suicide attempt survivors. He is also a full member of the European Association for Body Psychotherapy (EABP), and international council member of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (IAPSP).

March 2022: IOSP Somatic Psychotherapy Online Training Program

The Institute of Somatic Psychotherapy (IOSP) is delighted to offer mental health practitioners a training program in Somatic Psychotherapy that is holistic and puts the embodied relationship between client/patient and practitioner at the centre of attention.

This training intends to address those aspects of human experience that are too frequently paid insufficient attention to, or even ignored in other trainings.

8 February 2021: Working in the UK national health system as a somatic psychotherapist – without touch- a PACFA Webinar

Courtenay Young who is the main presenter for the 1 year Institute of Somatic Psychotherapy (IOSP) somatic psychotherapy training  will discuss what it’s like to have been working for the NHS in a time-restrictive non-touch and goal-oriented environment for the last 20 years.  Courtenay will outline how he collaborates with patients from a somatic psychotherapy perspective and how this differs from how he engages with clients in a clinical practice outside of the NHS.

Courtenay works from the perspective of being an embodied therapist, able to relate with patients and clients at a variety of different levels.  He promotes pragmatically: ‘what works’ for the client, as well as ‘what works’ in counselling and psychotherapy.
